JOSEPH G. HARGRAVES, MD

Born: February 5, 1940
Died: January 9, 2015

A beloved doctor practicing in Rocky Hill, Connecticut, Joseph G. Hargraves died unexpectedly of a powerful bacterial disease, probably after being infected by a patient. Although he had no children he is survived by his wife Doris, who had suffered a stroke before his death.

Information about his life and passing was given to me by her caregiver. He did not appear in the Banner in June 1962 because he left Yale after three years before attending Johns Hopkins medical school.

He was characterized as funny, warm, kind and very smart. Every weekend he would drive to church in Middlebury where he sang in the choir. He was active as a volunteer. One anecdote: Mrs. Hargraves' caretaker was called by a patient at the nearby VA hospital who would only talk with Dr. Hargraves, who convinced him not to commit suicide.

The plans Joe and Doris had to retire to Florida were interrupted by his death.

Joe grew up in Middlebury, Connecticut and he graduated from Sacred Heart High School in Waterbury, Connecticut. He was a member of Berkeley College at Yale. He and Doris resided in Rocky Hill, Connecticut at the time of his death.
