RICHARD LAKEIN

Richard Lakein was born in Baltimore, son of David Richard and Bessye Ireene Tissenbaum Lakein. He grew up in Baltimore and prepared for Yale at Baltimore City College.

At Yale he was a member of Jonathan Edwards College. Richard majored in mathematics. He was awarded the Galpin Prize (Latin) in 1958 and the Barge Prize in mathematics in 1960. He was on Dean’s List. Richard was active with Hillel, serving in the cabinet 1959-1962, as Treasurer 1960-1961, and as choral group director 1959-1962. He was Freshman coordinator for the Jewish Appeal, in the Freshman Chorus and the More Choir (1959-1960).

Following graduation in 1962, Richard was awarded his Ph.D. in mathematics by University of Maryland in 1967. He then became a math professor at SUNY Buffalo. In 1975 he joined the Department of Defense as a mathematician and computer scientist where he worked until his retirement.

Richard stated in his bio in our 40th Reunion Book in 2002, “In my spare time I am the Gabbai (I run and manage the services) of a large modern orthodox synagogue in Potomac, Maryland.”

Richard and his wife Annette had 2 sons.: Meir (1991), who like his father was a resident of J.E and who is married to Onit Kent (also JE, 1993) and David. Meir is a community organizer residing near Boston and David is a computer programmer in Maryland. In addition to Annette and his sons and daughter-in-law, Richard is survived by 2 grandchildren Ziv (born in 2004) and Matan (born in 2007). He was predeceased by his parents and his brother Alan.

Funeral services were conducted at the synagogue in Potomac where Richard had volunteered. He was interred at Garden of Remembrance Memorial Park, Clarksburg, Maryland.

Classmate Stu Sidney notified the class of Richard’s death at our 55th Reunion and supplied information for this obituary essay.
